The company Kompas was founded in 1955 as a small craft shop with five or six employees that repaired navigation and other various measuring instruments. As the company developed, the service activity gradually decreased, and the production activity related mostly to shipbuilding developed. The company produced navigation instruments and nautical equipment, ship's firefighting and sanitary fittings and was also engaged in the activity of servicing and repairing nautical and other measuring instruments. The company was privatized in 1995, first as a joint stock company, and then in 1998 it was transformed into a company. It went bankrupt in 2008, after which the company Kompas nova was established, which still operates today. The company first operated in a small space in Matije Gupca Street near the Mrtvi Kanal (across from the Feral tavern), and then (from 1977 to 1990) on the corner of Ivana Zajca Street and Ribarska Street along the Mrtvi Kanal (across the theatre, where the restaurant Brun, today the restaurant Opera was located) where there was a lathe, tinsmith and a mechanic workshop. At that time, about fifteen workers were employed. The range of products was very wide: marine firefighting fittings, valves, nozzles, hoses, buoys with light for lifebuoys, fog horns, mousetraps, flusometers (washers), directional plates (goniometers), magnetic compasses and stands, nautical triangles, compasses and movable rulers…. The company also operated in a small area near the RI Department Store (precision mechanics and watchmakers) until 1984. Barometers, binoculars, chronometers, sextants and other instruments, even civilian watches, were serviced there. The employees went to the ships in the port and maintained the equipment there as well and they also calibrated the manometers. The offices were in the premises of the Filodrammatica (director and 5 employees). The company's production part then moved to Škurinje (in the area of Mihačeva draga Street, near Adria Renault) where it operated from 1990 to 2000. In 2000, the company moved to Torpedo (on the street side of the factory next to the former entrance). The company was also engaged in the production of candelabra and bronze fences and the production of exclusive nautical products that mainly serve as business gifts (table clock with pen insert, clock in the shape of porthole on a board – octagon, ship clock, smaller ship compass, various wall sets with nautical instruments, wall lamps, ashtrays, etc.)
