In 1905, a modern ice factory (on the right bank of the Banina stream) started operating. Along with the laundry and ironing room, which was operating since 1912 (on the left bank of the Banina stream), it was the foundation of the "Ika fish cannery". The World War I slowed down the tourist and catering business, but after the war the work of the ice factory was resumed, which had been operating at almost the same intensity since 1920 as before the war. Over the years, the ice was consumed less and less, the machines were not maintained, so in 1941 the ice factory existed only on paper. All shares of the factory were bought in 1934 by the Opatija entrepreneur Ploebst. At the end of 1941, the remains of the ice factory were bought by the entrepreneur Salvatore Sorrentino, who started with the salting and canning of fish (the SALSOR company), which operated until 1943, when only the warehouse remained on the premises. In 1934, the company Conservificio Adria joint stock company from Rijeka started with fish canning in the premises of the laundry and ironing room. The joint-stock company SAMAR from Venice took over the well-established company in the late 1930s. After Italy entered the war in 1941, the factory was taken over by the joint stock company ITALIM from Milan. In 1944, the factory was taken over by the entrepreneur G. Pirovano who returned the name Conservificio Adria, and already in 1945 the factory was taken over by a joint stock company from Rijeka and given the name Conservificio Quarnero Fiume, Stabilimenti Ica under which the factory worked until liberation. Very soon after the liberation, the factory was renamed "Kvarner Fish Cannery", and in 1947 it was nationalized and handed over to a unique company of Istrian canned fish factories (Istrian Canned Fish Factory Učka). At that time, fish canning and ice processing factories operated as one enterprise. On 8 January 1948, the factory was handed over to the City People's Committee of Opatija, which on 16 August 1948, founded the "Ika Fish Canning Factory", name which was used until the end of the factory's existence. At the beginning of 1953, the construction of the Hamburg and tunnel furnaces for smoking fish (sprat) began. In 1956, the factory focused on fishing in local waters, so it established a purchase station based in Mošćenička Draga with the task of buying and selling fish. As the overall situation with fishing was not favourable, the Fishermen's Company in Opatija and the Fishermen's Cooperative in Brseč were forced to merge with the Ika Fish Canning Factory in 1959 (Fishermen's Company Opatija) and 1960 (Fishermen's Cooperative Brseč). The factory was merged with OTO Brodokomerc in 1970, and from 21 September 1973 the factory was constituted as the basic organization of joint work of the Trade and Hotel Company "Brodokomerc" in Rijeka, from 1980 a working organization within Rijeka Brodokomerc, and from 1981 to the basic organization of the Working Organization "Brodokomerc – Fish", and thus operated until its closure. The most famous product of this factory was quality smoked sprats, the production of which was the basic activity of the factory for almost 10 years. The factory also performed a number of other activities such as coastal and deep fishing, wholesale and retail (fish, shellfish, crabs and other seafood), production of canned fish, purchase of fish and ice production and sale of ice. In the last years of business, the main goal was production for export.
