The first known shipyard in Mali Lošinj was opened by Siksto Katarinić in 1823 at today’s Škverić. It was called Primo Squero because it was the first shipyard here. A little further north, at Sardoćeva, the master shipbuilder Marko Martinolić opened his own shipyard in 1850, which eventually became one of the most famous and innovative in the Adriatic. Its successor is the present-day shipyard. His son Nikola, although completely self-taught, built the then largest sailing ship in the Mediterranean here, the Imperatrice Elisabetta, whose launch in 1875 was attended by the Emperor Franz Joseph himself.
