Once “Il Mandracchio” was a popular neighborhood of fishermen. It was one of the most representative places of seafaring civilization, and today there are a road called “Via Labirinto” and some parallel streets. The local name is due to the fact that on the beach of the district – when once the sea reached it – were moored boats and were crowded the fishermen’s slums. They begin to build modest houses like “Case Basse” (“Low Houses") or “Case cielo-terra” (“Townhouse”) and the shape of the alleys represented a real labyrinth. In the past the houses devoid of any hygienic requirements and, above all, of an adequate sewerage system.
It dates back to 1934 the demolition of the last house of mud and straw (“Pagliaro”).
In 1939 they wanted to improve and reclaim this area after the demolition of about thirty properties to open what would later become “Via Mario Curzi”.
