The mountain takes its name from the great cross raised in 1901 and built by the local blacksmith Nazzareno Bruni. The cross is raised in memory of the Holy Year (1900) and following the mission preached by the Passionists at the behest of the priest Monsignor Francesco Sciocchetti. Every third of May (to remember the discovery of the Christ’s Cross) the population of San Benedetto del Tronto was used to climb the hill near the Cross as a sign of devotion.
In 1944 it was bombed by the German military but in 1947, at the hands of the master builder Raffaele Gentili, the same cross was recovered. In 1975, on the occasion of the Feast of the Cross, it was restored and illuminated thanks to the people of “Circolo dei Sambenedettesi”.
From “Belvedere Monte della Croce” you can admire the town of San Benedetto del Tronto.
