The port of San Benedetto del Tronto is the southernmost of Marche region and it consists of North Dock, entirely banked, and the South Pier which is the tourist one. The port hosts lots of fishing boats and it is the second most important port in Marche region.
In 1912 the construction of the northern dock’s first section was completed and in 1919 the construction of the southern pier’s first section began. In the decade of ’30 the realization of an ulterior extension of the north pier and some activities to the south pier started some activities to the south pier after the affirmation of motorboats.
During the wartime, between 1940 and 1945, many fishing boats were requisitioned, and the port structure suffered damage due to the lack of maintenance that caused a progressive cover-up, and the bombings damaged the area making it almost unusable. In the post-war decade the fishing fleet was rebuilt, the shore dock was redesigned, and all the buildings needed for maritime activity were adapted.
Since the ‘60s the fleet of San Benedetto del Tronto expanded towards the so-called “Pesca Mediterranea e Oceanica” such as the “Mediterranean and oceanic fishing”. The port had to adapt so it expanded.
The last three decades were characterized by works of adaptation and improvement of the harbor structures in order to reduce sandy zones. The new center of the Harbor office, the Fish Market and a fish auction were constructed. This area became touristic thanks to the pier, the monuments’ construction and the lighting systems.
