“Il Torrione” or “Torre dei Gualtieri” is what remains of Castrum Sancti Benedicti that rises in 1146. It is reworked and adapted over time compared to the original structure. It is entirely in brick, about 20 meters high and with a hexagonal plan with 5 meters sides and walls 1.5 meters thick. The tower is on four levels. In the Napoleonic period the current entrance was built to facilitate access. In order to expand the “Belvedere” (“Viewpoint”) was also demolished the boundary wall placed about 3 meters from the perimeter of the tower and built on a pre-existing structure that is assumed of the V sec. A. D.
Dates back to 2001 the conservative intervention that gave back access to the top of the tower from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the town overlooking the sea.
