The cap (also locally called "fur") is what remains of the ancient custom of sacrificing a sheep to the sea gods and putting its fleece on the bow; over time the custom has been lost and the animal's fur has become a sculpture made of wood and an ornament of the boat. All traditional boats have ornaments of this type on the bow, which at times also have the function of protection; in this case, however, the cap represents an ancient religious and symbolic function.
