Today's Shipyard “3. Maj” in Rijeka started operating in the 1890s. The names changed from Howaldts Werke from Kiel, through Danubius to Ganz & Danubius from Budapest, after the World War I Cantieri navali del Quarnaro and after the World War II the First Kvarner Shipyard and after that from 1949 until today 3 May. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, there was a floating dock in the Danubius shipyard, which was built in 1906 in the Kraljevica shipyard with 3750 t capacity. While it was extended and reconstructed in 1929 and 1949, and its carrying capacity increased to 6000 t, in 1950 it was handed over to the Viktor Lenac shipyard. The Viktor Lenac shipyard dates back to the end of the 19th century, when in 1896 the engineer Josip Lazarus, with the approval of the Hungarian government, opened the first ship repair facility. After 1924, a part of the Lazarus shipyard belonged to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After the World War II, the shipyard changed its name to Viktor Lenac, annexed the former Martinšćica shipyard and included a floating dock, which was taken over from the 3. Maj Shipyard.
