The Rijeka Port Authority is a non-profit institution for the management, development and exploitation of the Port of Rijeka. The Rijeka Port Authority manages the development of port capacities and is responsible for granting concessions to private concession companies for economic activities in the port of Rijeka, i.e. in the port basins of Rijeka and Sušak and in the port basins in Bakar Bay, Omišalj Bay on the island of Krk and Raša Basin in Istria. After the accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union, the port of Rijeka has become a part of the basic transport TEN-T network of the European Union. It has taken over the status of the main, core port on the Mediterranean Corridor and its inclusion in the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor is underway. The main goal is to develop the port of Rijeka into one of the most important transit ports in the northern Adriatic for European markets that naturally gravitate to it as its destinations. The Rijeka Port Authority implements a number of capital projects, which include infrastructure projects for the construction and improvement of railway infrastructure in the port. This will improve the connection between the port and the hinterland and speed up transport on the Rijeka traffic route. Strategic development seeks to contribute to the transformation of the port of Rijeka into a strong intermodal centre in the northern Adriatic. A key year in the development and modernization of port infrastructure was 2003, when a loan agreement was signed between the Republic of Croatia, the Port of Rijeka Authority, Hrvatske Ceste, Hrvatske Autoceste and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. This event marked the beginning of the Rijeka Gateway project, i.e. the project of Renovation of the Rijeka Traffic Route, which created the conditions for the implementation of one of the most complex development projects in the history of the port of Rijeka. This project enabled the expansion of the container terminal on Brajdica, the construction of a maritime passenger terminal and a new container terminal on the Zagreb Quay, and the conversion of the port area of Delta and Porto Baroš into urban facilities.
