The Harbour Master's Offices are regional units of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure within the Administration directly responsible for performing the tasks of navigation safety and supervision of the maritime domain. Harbour master's offices perform tasks in accordance with the Harbour Master's Offices Act which regulates the territorial organization and organization of work of harbour master’s offices, determines safety of navigation and supervision of maritime domain and the manner of organization of their performance, determines the rights, obligations and responsibilities of employees in performing these activities, their employment status, inspection powers and other issues important for the work of harbour master’s offices and the performance of tasks within their scope of work. The activity of the Harbour Master's Office is to supervise navigation in the inland waters and territorial sea of the Republic of Croatia, search and rescue of human lives and property at sea, inspection activities of navigation safety, inspection of maritime domain, registration and deletion of ships, and keeping registers of ships, determining seaworthiness, calibration of boats, registration and deletion of boats and keeping of boat registers, issuing seaman's books, determining professional qualification of seafarers for acquiring a maritime profession, issuing and keeping records of issued authorizations for service on ships and other administrative, professional and technical activities of safety of navigation at sea according to a special law and other regulations. Harbour Master’s Office Rijeka performs the above tasks in its area.
