The Customs Administration, as an organizational unit of the Ministry of Finance, performs the tasks of determining and collecting customs duties, excise duties, special taxes, value added taxes and other prescribed public levies, implements prescribed measures and actions to ensure and protect the market and society, and create the most favourable functioning of the Customs Union market, with effective control of the European Union's external borders. Among other things, the customs service carries out customs control over foreign goods, control over domestic goods placed under the procedure for export or placed in a free zone and customs warehouse and control over products subject to special taxes. It carries out customs procedures and determines the customs-approved treatment or use of goods. Some of the numerous obligations include the tasks of calculation and collection of customs, tax, excise and other duties on import, export and transit of goods; determining the customs value, origin of goods and classification of goods in the nomenclature of the Customs Tariff in accordance with applicable regulations and international agreements; customs control and verification of the use of duty-free goods; prevention and detection of misdemeanours and other criminal offenses; cooperation in the implementation of foreign trade, foreign exchange, sanitary, phytosanitary, veterinary and other activities related to cross-border traffic of goods and persons. In that sense, the Rijeka Regional Customs Office operates in its area.
