Costruita tra il 1689 e il 1691, la Torre San Michele ha sempre svolto funzione di difesa della città del sale.
A pianta quadrata con lato di 13,5 m., altezza di 22,5 m. e muri di 3 m. di spessore, la Torre era un vero e proprio fortino, con numerose aperture, finestre e feritoie corredate di armamenti a breve e lunga gittata. La Torre sembra ispirata a un disegno di Michelangelo Buonarroti, realizzato per difendere le aree costiere dello Stato Pontificio e conservato presso gli archivi della Reverenda Camera Apostolica.
Per alcuni anni la Torre venne anche utilizzata come faro.
Built between 1689 and 1691, the San Michele Tower has always served as a defence for the city an for salt. With a square olan with a side of 13.5 m, height of 22.5 m and walls of 3 m thick, the Tower was a real fort, with numerous openings, windows and slits equipped with short and long range armaments. The Tower seems to be inspired by a drowing by Michelangelo Buonarroti, created to defend the coastal areas of the Papal State and kept in the archives of the Reverenda Camera Apostolica. The Tower was also used as a lighthouse for some years.
