Back in 1948, in the difficult conditions of post-war development and poverty, fishermen from Rijeka founded the Sport Fishing Association "Luben", which was also the first sport fishing association in Croatia. The first president of sport fishing association (ŠRD) Luben was Petar Klauzberger, the former mayor of Rijeka and among the first ones to be a very successful underwater fisherman. With its founding, ŠRD Luben was in line with the world trends and in this area it was a pioneer of sport fishing. At the Northern Adriatic Spearfishing Championship, held in 1957 in Pula, ŠRD Luben won second place in the team competition, and in the same year at the Northern Adriatic Angling Championship held in Lovran, ŠRD Luben also won second place in the team competition. In 1957, the State Spearfishing Championship was held in Zadar, where ŠRD Luben won third place in the team competition, and outside the competition first place. The State Spearfishing Championship, which was held on Hvar in 1967, brought ŠRD Luben the title of champion in team competition. The year 1972 was one of the most successful and beautiful years in the fifty-year long history of the Association. Some of the more important results are: at the National Championship in Underwater Orienteering held in Bled, Miljenko Kuzele became the state champion in diving on invisible landmarks and Damir Maurović the champion in diving on visible landmarks; Miljenko Kuzele won the title of state champion in free diving at 400 m and diving at 100, 400 and 800 m; at the World Angling Championship, which took place on Murter, Branko Felker from Luben won first place and became the world champion; at the European Spearfishing Championship held in England, the Yugoslav national team won fifth place among 14 national teams, and Damir Maurović and Krešo Stanković won 18th and 21st place, respectively, in the overall standings. Sport fishing society "Luben" with its work and activities of its members creates and improves the conditions for sport fishing at sea, as well as spearfishing for creative and recreational reasons, organizes competitions, meetings, exhibitions and similar events and participates in similar events organized by other societies, alliances and communities. From year to year, the society gathers an increasing number of members, mostly the number of members has been about 1500, and occasionally the number of members was even close to 2000. ŠRD "Luben" in its regular work organizes and holds angling school for younger juniors from 5 to 16 years and older juniors from 17 to 21 years. In addition to juniors, everyone else who wants to learn and engage in sport fishing at sea and scuba diving – veterans and seniors – is invited and welcome. Sport fishing society "Luben" first operated in Ribarska Street 4 (office and social rooms), then in Matije Gupca Street 6 and 7 (warehouses). Today, the social rooms are in a brick building on the corner next to the drawbridge on the Mrtvi Kanal ("Casa rosa").
